  • Job Purpose: 

    Under general supervision performs wide variety of duties relative to the preparation and cooking of routine foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, for consumption by hospital patients and cafeteria patrons. Provides general assistance to other production personnel as may be needed. May assist in preparing vegetables, soups, etc. May perform various cooking functions under supervision. The relief Cook provides relief duties in the coverage of vacation, sickness, LOA, holiday, and days off of the following production personnel. Breakfast Cook, Cold Food Production Person, Short Order cook, and other Relief Cooks.


    Education/Training: High school of equivalent with additional culinary training. Licensure: none Certifications: none Work Experience: Requires at least 6 months institutional cooking experience physical: 1. Extended periods of standing, bending, and walking. 2. Eye hand coordination. 3. Able to carry or lift items, no less than 20 lbs. 4. Able to label containers correctly and accurately. 5. Can maneuver trucks weighing an excess of 200 lbs throughout the hospital. 6. Must be able to reach items from shelves and counters that are above the head and below the waist. Mental: 1. Can work closely with people. Can work collaboratively with a group of people. 2. Can evaluate and process information rapidly and make decisions that are consistent with the department requirements for running a quality food service department. 3. Multi-task oriented - good organizational abilities. 4. Able to work in a demanding, stressful environment with sufficient concentration to complete tasks even with interruptions and distractions. (ability to block out irrelevant noises and conversations while completing work). 5. Able to foster a team environment with good communication skills and conflict resolution techniques. 6. Able to calmly assess and act on unusual occurrences within the department and make decisions that safeguard the quality of patient care. [cha072516]
