Job Details

  • The Agenda for Children Literacy Initiative (AFC) based at the Cambridge Public Health Department, helps children enter school ready to learn how to read and write by educating and supporting their parents and caregivers. Literacy Ambassadors will participate in, organize, and/or facilitate home visits, workshops, and events that: 
    -Help parents understand the importance of talking & reading to their young children.  
    -Provide information to parents about resources & services that are available to them.  
    -Help parents connect to agencies or organizations.  

    Job Purpose: 1. Reach out to families in your communities through mailings, phone calls, and in-person conversations. 2. Do home visits to families in English and/or your home language. 3. Work at community activities, events and/or fairs with Agenda for Children staff members. 4. Assist and/or lead workshops in English, and/or also in your home language (if you are bilingual). 5. Continue to learn about available community resources. 6. Attend all necessary training sessions. You want to promote literacy (talking and reading).

    Qualifications: You have good communication skills. You can connect to families with young children. You are legally able to work in the U.S. You have experience parenting and want to work with parents. Knowledge and/or willingness to learn about community resources. You speak English (ESOL Level 4 and above). Candidates that are residents of Cambridge, bilingual and/or familiar with working with dads, teens or African American population are strongly encouraged to apply.
