Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

The Cambridge/Somerville WIC Program has over 3,000 participants and is part of Cambridge Health Alliance. Our staff includes four Breastfeeding Peer Counselors who are committed to serving the community and supporting prenatal and breastfeeding moms.

Job Duties:

  • Collaborates with the Breastfeeding Coordinator and the Senior Nutritionist to ensure high quality breastfeeding services at the WIC site.
  • Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding women during pregnancy and postpartum to support better breastfeeding outcomes.
  • Provides appropriate referrals to participants, according to clinic-established protocol
  • Collaborates and coordinates participant care with Nutritionists and Hospital Lactation Consultant.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with Senior Nutritionists and Breastfeeding Coordinator to plan and implement World Breastfeeding Week activities.
  • Documents individual or group breastfeeding counseling sessions according to policy on EOS.
  • Assists WIC Staff in promoting breastfeeding through special projects.
  • Maintains the breastfeeding contact log at the WIC site.
  • Trains or demonstrates breastfeeding counselor work to new breastfeeding counselors, interns and other WIC staff.
  • Assists in developing breastfeeding education materials.
  • Attends trainings and state agency meetings as required
  • Participates in staff meetings monthly. Consistently performs as an integral member of the team and performs in a manner that fosters a positive and productive work environment.
  • Initiates and performs duties with minimal supervision and takes on additional responsibilities when necessary to ensure smooth operations.
  • Follows prescribed safety rules and regulations. Observes and promotes hospital policies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
  • Runs a monthly online breastfeeding class using Google Meet. Creates and updates Google Meet online class as needed, sends group invitations to attendees independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications:

  • Has experience personally breastfeeding in the past 5 years
  • Bilingual preferred
  • Sensitive to the needs of the WIC population
  • Demonstrated collaborative team player
  • Availability to work at multiple WIC
  • Comfortable giving online classes once a month. Working independently and good knowledge of Google Meets/Zoom (compatible)
