Job Details

  • Follows FNS Loving Support WIC peer counselor scope of practice. Receives a caseload of WIC mothers and makes established routine periodic contacts with all mothers assigned. Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including providing information on the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone or in person at the WIC office. Keeps each mother's information strictly confidential. Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC mothers in WIC computer system (Eos). Refers mothers, as appropriate to other relevant services Teaches breastfeeding classes for pregnant and postpartum mothers, and leads breastfeeding support groups. Attends peer counselor staff meetings Participates in professional development activities


    Has breastfed at least one baby within the last 5 years (does not have to be currently breastfeeding). Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience. Is available to work outside the usual 8 to 5 office hours Is willing to make phone calls from home. Has good customer service skills and communicates in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner with participants, staff and supervisors Is computer savvy Able to remain calm and exercise good judgment in unusual or stressful situations. Able to attend required trainings which may involve full-day trainings Must be able to communicate in Spanish fluently Current or previous WIC participant preferred
