DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

CHA Dental Services at our Windsor Street Care Center is a teaching site for the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and other local schools. People come here to learn about research and techniques in oral health. Our residents frequently provide dental services and education to children and adults through community events and programs. Our office in Cambridge provides a wide range of services for all ages. You can find everything from routine cleanings to dentures. We also offer evening hours and have a children-only clinic one weekend a month.

Summary:
The Dental Assistant performs duties such as: seating patients, triaging for emergency patients, updating medical history as requested by provider, assisting the dentist chair side in performing treatment (oral surgery, endodontic, restorations, dentures), prepare materials, equipment, and the operatory for treatment and have them ready for the dentist's use, take x-rays and assist the dentist in laboratory work. Sterilization and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:
Prepare and set up operatories, paying attention to recognized protocols.
Prepare cleaning and sterilizing equipment, autoclaves and developer
Collect charts, ensure all necessary records are included, i.e. radiology record, perio chart, and pain chart
Prepare operatory for required procedure
Greet and seat patient in treatment area, ensuring correct patient (check name and DOB) check for any changes in Med History, meds or special instructions. Relay this information to the doctor. Take BP if required.
Expose, develop and mount radiographs as directed by doctor by incorporating departmental protocols, ensure all x-rays are properly identified.
Prepare duplicate x-rays if required.
Assist doctors with procedures using 4 handed assisting technique. Ensure doctors have all the necessary materials and pay attention to the doctor's requirements throughout the appointment.
Take, pour, and trim models. Receive and dispatch lab cases, keep the lab area clean and tidy
Break down operatories, clean, sterilize and maintain instruments including handpieces following OSHA and JCAHO requirements
Maintain stocks of instruments and supplies in all areas of the clinic
Ensure all equipment checks and cleaning schedules are followed and logs completed as required
Check with front desk for late arrivals or emergency patients
Follow all end of day protocols, clean operatory, purge lines, break down sterilizing areas, etc.
Ensure all dental units, developer and compressor are turned off
Maintain hygiene, cleanliness and tidiness in all areas of the clinic being cognizant of all departmental, OSHA and JCAHO requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma, American Heart Association Basic Life Support, Radiology Certification, prior experience as a dental assistant. Highly qualified new graduates of a dental assisting program may be considered. Other Skills: Demonstrated ability to take initiative and strong problem-solving skills. Strong team player and team building skills; ability to collaborate with all levels and areas. Bilingual Spanish, Portuguese and/or Haitian Creole preferred.
