Cambridge Health Alliance provides maternity services at Cambridge Hospital and serves newborns and their families with primary care in outpatient settings at many locations. Up until now, there has been very limited and only group lactation support for breastfeeding mothers. We are adding expert level lactation care for mothers and babies in the pediatric outpatient settings in Cambridge and Somerville. We are hiring an IBCLC to see patients at Cambridge Pediatrics located at Cambridge Hospital and at Somerville Pediatrics located at Broadway Health Center in Somerville. The Nurse Practitioner lactation consultant will provide expert breastfeeding assessment and counseling with mothers and infants who are experiencing breastfeeding problems in accordance with current research literature and national standards of care.
Responsibilities: Accepts consultation requests from primary care providers and collaborates in the care of these infants. Accepts referrals from the inpatient lactation consultants. Accepts self-referrals from CHA patients and those in the local communities,. Documents in the infant's medical record and in the mother's, as appropriate. Track patient progress/concerns in person or via telephone, as appropriate. Performs and documents consultations for complex lactation patients and will be available to those with more routine issues and to providers and nurses who have a need for information about potential referrals. Serves as a clinical resource to staff and providers. Develops a feeding plan based on the individual needs and goals of the breastfeeding mother. Evaluates the mother's use of equipment related to breastfeeding. Maintains current breastfeeding reference materials as a resource. Participates in the development of breastfeeding guidelines, protocols, and patient education materials with inpatient lactation consultants. Participates in data collection and subsequent program development and implementation that improve outcomes for breastfeeding women and infants. Sets standards of practice and patient care for selected patient populations Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care needs of the patient. Document nursing care in compliance with policies procedures and practices established by the Nursing Department and the hospital. Performs nursing care consistent with the needs of neonatal, pediatric/adolescent, and adult patients.
Education/Training: Graduation from an NLN accredited school of nursing as a Nurse Practitioner. Certified IBCLC. AHA BLS.
Work Experience/Skills: Recent and relevant practice experience as an IBCLC required, preferably in an outpatient setting. Knowledge of accepted lactation consultant standards and practice. Maintains expertise and certification through appropriate continuing education.
