About CHA Patient Transport
Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) is a nationally recognized, award-winning public healthcare system that serves the communities of Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston’s metro-north region. With a mission to improve the health of our communities, CHA provides high-quality, culturally responsive care through an integrated network of hospitals, primary care centers, and specialty services. Our CHA Transporters play a vital role in ensuring the safe, timely, and compassionate movement of patients throughout CHA's facilities.
Position Overview
The Transporter assumes total responsibility for patients' welfare to and from various areas of the hospital by either wheelchair or liter. Under supervision, the person in this role provides safe, competent, and efficient transportation of patients across all areas and departments including X-ray, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Electrocardiogram, Outpatient Lab, EEG/EMG, Stress Lab, Vascular Lab, Emergency Department, PACU, Outpatient Clinic, Admitting, Morgue, Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, ICU, Cast Room, Physician’s Offices and all patient floors.
Key Responsibilities
Using precaution and employing necessary basic principles of body mechanics, the Transporter transfers patients to and from their bed or chair to a wheelchair or liter. During transport, they are responsible for transferring all IV bottles to and from the chair or liter, as well as observing the IV flow and reporting any malfunctions to the nurse manager or the IV team. The Transporter crucially checks oxygen tanks daily to ensure that tanks are full for the shift, and contacts the Respiratory Department for replacement tanks as needed. In addition, they work with the on-shift nurse or respiratory technician to arrange the patient's oxygen to and from the wall receptacle and portable oxygen tanks, monitor oxygen flow, and report any abnormalities. They also ensure that patients’ foley tube, chest tubes, and containers are properly placed on the liter, bed or wheelchair. In the event of any emergency while transporting a patient, they take proper steps in getting the patient to proper help immediately.
