Summary:
To assist the surgical provider and circulating nurse through preparation and assistance with surgical procedures. Surgical technologists prepare surgical equipment, provide equipment to surgeons during surgery, maintain the integrity of the sterile environment within the operating room and complete other tasks as appropriate.
Responsibilities:
Consults with caregivers to obtain clinical information as indicated.
Serves as a professional resource to colleagues in an open, friendly manner
Answers phone in a professional manner and complies with standards for managing patient calls
Functions as a team member, participating in follow through on work that needs to be completed.
Collaborates with unit colleagues to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical standards
Demonstrates ability to handle emergency situations in a prompt, precise and professional manner.
Demonstrates surgical sterile conscience.
Reports breeches in sterile technique to responsible registered nurse.
Demonstrates understanding of current OSHA standards and guidelines for use of personal protective equipment.
Adheres to position descriptions, policies, protocols, CHA Service Standards, regulatory agencies and procedures related to professional practice.
Provides age-appropriate care in a compassionate, caring, culturally, and ethnically sensitive manner.
Responsible for participation in all checklists.
Understands and demonstrates principles of electrical safety in a procedural environment.
Completes annual education requirements and in-service training as required.
Attends meetings and participates in committees as required.
Participates in unit specific QA/QI program.
Demonstrates understanding of his/her role in emergency codes.
Daily testing of glucometer
Set-up of procedure rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies
Enters procedural data into Provation
Adheres to reprocessing standards for endoscopes
Assists provider with endoscopy procedures
Stocks rooms
Performs unit specific quality testing
Scrubs, gowns and gloves
Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medication/solutions
Labels all medications/solutions on the sterile field
Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to incision and prior to closure of incision
Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants
Helps in draping sterile field
Passes instruments, utilizing neutral zone, to surgeon during procedure
Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
Prepares sterile dressings
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization according to policies and procedures
Prepares instrumentation appropriately for transport to decontamination area
Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room
Assists in room readiness in a timely manner
Prepares operating room with special equipment and supplies in accordance with established procedures and surgeon’s preferences
Anticipates needs during procedure and requests additional supplies appropriately
Collects and labels specimens according to policies and procedures.
Organizes daily work and sets priorities appropriately.
Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Other information:
Education/Training: High School Diploma or equivalent
Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program for new hires
Successful completion of Periop 101 during CHA orientation
Certifications:
- Has successfully completed an accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized surgical technologist certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists.
- Has successfully completed an accredited school of surgical technology but has not obtained the certified surgical technologist certification by the date of hire; however, this certification must be obtained within 12 months of the graduation date.
- Was employed as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility on July 1, 2013.
- Has successfully completed a training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service which has been deemed appropriate by the commissioner.
