The CHA Eye Center is located in the Highland Building at Somerville Hospital. Our thriving practice helps patients with a wide range of eye conditions and includes a full optical shop for prescriptions and contact lens fittings. This gives patients everything they need in one location, from routine exams to advanced treatments. We see patients of all ages - from infants to older adults. Our specialty eye care services include: diabetic eye care, treatment of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other eye diseases, cataract surgery, refractive surgery, LASIK and corneal transplants. 


Job Purpose: Under supervision of the Ophthalmology Practice Manager and the Chief of Ophthalmology, possesses knowledge and skills in history taking, patient services, instrument maintenance, clinical optics, basic ocular motility, visual fields, intermediate tonometry, contact lenses, ocular pharmacology and photography. Responsible for performing necessary testing prior to patient’s encounter with the Ophthalmologist and/or Optometrist; assist in minor surgical and laser procedures; perform specialties adjunctive testing; perform refractions; assist in other office responsibilities as needed.


Responsibilities: • Prep patients for Ophthalmologists • Triages telephone issues and documents in chart • Open and close examination rooms, cleans as necessary • Performs visual field testing, a-scan and corneal topography • Performs accurate refractions • Complete a thorough medical work-up prior to the patient being seen by the Ophthalmologist. This includes a medical history, chief complaint, review of current medication list, check of visual acuity and intraocular pressure • Assist with fundus photography • Prepares fluorescein syringes • Check equipment for cleanliness. Ensure that biomed review of equipment is up to date. Sterilizes instruments and maintains equipment • Assist Ophthalmologists with minor procedures • Assist Ophthalmologists with laser surgery • Demonstrates ability to establish priorities, organizes daily work and uses good judgment 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Other information: High School Diploma or equivalent Certifications: Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
