Summary:
To assist in the non-professional aspects of the School Health Program as determined by the Registered Nurse. The School Health Aide is under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. The School Health Aide primarily works independently in the school health office with the nurse available by phone and beep

Responsibilities:
• Assigned clerical functions which include filling out various forms
• Assisting with organizing handouts and other notices to go home with students
• Notification to families regarding incomplete records, mandated health screenings and immunization status
• Filing health records
• Tallying of statistics
• Ability to utilize computerized health records and use interoffice computer systems
• Contacting parents regarding injuries and health problems and referral for evaluation
• Consultation with school nurse/principal re: dismissals, severe injuries and playground safety
• Successful completion of medication training program, and receive a passing grade in medication test annually. Must adhere to guidelines of Board of Registration in Nursing Regulations (244-CMR 3.05).
• Administers appropriate medications and documents administration as delegated by supervising RN in accordance with Board of Reg. in Nursing Regulation (244-CMR 3.05)
• Assists School Nurse with School Health activities, i.e. PE, other screening activities as assigned.
• Monitoring and ordering supplies in collaboration with supervising nurse
• Weighs and measures students and documents in the health record
• Follows policy regarding Universal Precautions when handling blood/body fluids of students.
• Consults with school nurse for more complicated clinical situations
• Responds to emergency events in the school building and informs or consults with the school nurse for each event
• Assists students or performs nebulizer treatments according to physician orders
• Assists students or performs finger stick procedure to monitor blood glucose levels, documents results in health record and consults with school nurse for abnormal results
• Performs screening for head lice as indicated
• Maintains confidentiality regarding all health information pertaining to any student or staff member
• Takes and records vital signs as indicated, Blood Pressure, Pulse, Respirations and Temperature
School Health Assistant will provide:
• School orientation and introduction to appropriate school staff
• Consult/teaching regarding clerical and clinical functions
• Orientation to the use of all school forms
• Review of Basic First Aid, review of information in School Health Policy Book
• Daily supervision and collaboration with RN Clinical Manager for School Health on annual performance review
• Training and orientation to medication administration and annual review and competency test
• Method for consultation by telephone or beeper when problems arise

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Certifications: Health Aide Certification -Medical Assistant Certificate
Medication Administration Training/Test , AHA BLS Required
Work experience: Past experience working with school-age children
